Edward M. Griffin is a Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Minnesota, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. He has held visiting roles at Stanford University, University of San Francisco, University of Salzburg (as a Fulbright Fellow), and University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on colonial American literature, early national period writings, and the intersection of American religion and literature. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Morse-Alumni Award and Ruth Christie Award.
Education: B.S. in English (University of San Francisco, 1959), M.A. and Ph.D. in English and American Literature (Stanford University, 1966). He served in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer in Germany.
Research interests span colonial literature's influence on modern American writers, early American religious texts, and American Studies. His publications include biographies like Old Brick: Charles Chauncy of Boston and pedagogical reflections like Hoops & Hurdles.
Awards highlight his teaching excellence across undergraduate and graduate levels, alongside contributions to American Studies mentoring. He chaired the American Studies department during the 1980s and has taught a wide range of courses in British/American literature and interdisciplinary American Studies.
