Edward Lemay is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and directs the Interpersonal Relationships Lab. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Yale University (2008). His research focuses on cognition, emotion, and motivation within social interactions, particularly in friendships, romantic relationships, and workplace dynamics. Key areas include loneliness, world beliefs, intellectual humility, perceived discrimination, self-esteem, and communal motivation toward marginalized groups. Research employs dyadic, longitudinal, and behavioral observation methods.
He has published in top journals like Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and serves on editorial boards, including as associate editor for Emotion. Notable awards include the 2023 Outstanding Research Faculty Mentor Award from UMD. His work addresses global challenges such as pandemic impacts on social behavior and cross-cultural variations in emotional responses to crises.
