Dr. Raymond Knee is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He directs the Self, Motivation, and Relationship Theories (SMaRT) Lab, focusing on motivational aspects of interpersonal processes. His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and a B.S. from Oregon State University.
Research Focus: Dr. Knee investigates close relationships through three interconnected lenses:
- Implicit theories of relationships: Examining how beliefs about relationship stability influence conflict perception and maintenance.
- Self-determination: Studying autonomy in romantic partnerships and its impact on conflict management.
- Relationship-contingent self-esteem: Analyzing how self-worth tied to relationship outcomes affects emotional responses.
Publication Trends (2017-2024): His recent work demonstrates consistent emphasis on motivational frameworks in relational dynamics, with frequent application of Self-Determination Theory. Key themes include autonomy in conflict resolution, stigma reduction through self-compassion, IPV prevention mechanisms, and digital-era relationship challenges. Methodologies increasingly incorporate dyadic analyses and cross-disciplinary health behavior applications.
Student Advising: Dr. Knee has supervised 12+ Ph.D. students, evidenced by co-authorship on publications. Notable advisees include E.S. Kluwer, Z.G. Baker, and B.W. Hadden, with research spanning need fulfillment, rapport dynamics, and relationship autonomy.
