Edward Kaftan, PhD, is a Senior Research Scientist and Associate Director for Research Affairs at Yale Cancer Center. He holds appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Section of Medical Oncology and Hematology at Yale School of Medicine. Kaftan earned his PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Connecticut (1996) and a BS in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1989). His research focuses on cancer immunology and translational oncology, particularly biomarker development in lung cancer. He has led Yale Cancer Center’s Translational Research Office since 2014 and was promoted to Assistant Cancer Center Director for Translational Science in 2021, later becoming Associate Director for Research Affairs in 2022.
His work includes studies on immune checkpoint proteins (e.g., PD-1, PD-L1) and their role in cancer resistance, as well as combination therapies targeting KRAS mutations. Kaftan’s research also extends to purinergic receptor signaling in neuroinflammation and calcium signaling pathways in cellular physiology.
