Edward Guntrip is an Associate Professor in International Law at the University of Sussex, serving as Director of Recruitment and Admissions for the School of Law, Politics, and Sociology since 2021. Previously, he held roles including Senior Lecturer (2019–2024) and Lecturer in Law (2014–2019) at Sussex, and Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of East Anglia (2011–2014). He earned his LLB (Hons) and BSc from the University of Western Australia (2001), an LLM in International Law from the University of Cambridge (2005), and a PhD from Brunel University (2014).
His research focuses on international investment law, particularly its intersection with human rights law and governance of global commons like deep seabed resources. He examines fragmentation in international law regimes and procedural/substantive interactions in arbitration. Key themes include host-state counterclaims, investor accountability, and the legal framework for deep seabed mining.
Guntrip has authored/co-authored over 30 publications, including the 2024 book Counterclaims in Investment Arbitration and a 2025 paper on UNCITRAL reforms. He is a member of the Academic Forum on ISDS, IEL Collective, and the International Law Association. His teaching includes modules on International Investment Law and Commercial Arbitration.
Professional accolades include Visiting Fellowships (2019) and a Visiting Scholar role (2016). He supervises PhD candidates in investment law and global commons governance, and leads the International Economic Law Clinic at Sussex.
