Edward Giles is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at Monash Children’s Hospital, where he leads the paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) program. He is also a Research Fellow at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. He is actively involved in clinical research, particularly in mucosal immunology, host-microbiome interactions, and novel biotherapeutics for paediatric IBD. He is accepting PhD students for research in these areas.
- MBBS, University of Melbourne (2000)
- PhD, University of London (2015)
- MRCPCH (2004)
- FRACP (2016)
Edward Giles' research focuses on understanding the complex interactions between the host immune system and gut microbiome in the context of paediatric IBD. His work spans laboratory investigations into epithelial responses and interferon biology, as well as clinical studies on disease management, transitional care, and digital health interventions. He is particularly interested in developing new therapeutic strategies for children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
His recent publications (2023–2024) demonstrate a strong emphasis on high-impact clinical and translational research. Key themes include the role of interferons in colitis, bacterial clade-specific host responses, safety monitoring in paediatric IBD registries, and the development of eHealth platforms. He is the primary investigator on multiple phase 2/3 and phase 3 clinical trials evaluating novel agents such as upadacitinib, ozanimod, and vedolizumab in children with IBD, indicating a major focus on advancing pharmacological treatments.
- FRACP (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians), awarded 18 May 2016
- MRCPCH (Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health), awarded 21 October 2004
Edward Giles is actively mentoring students and leading a dynamic research team. He is the Principal Chief Investigator on at least five major active research projects, primarily multi-center clinical trials in paediatric IBD. He has received research funding to support these studies, though specific grant details are not listed. His leadership extends beyond the lab and clinic, as he serves as President of the Australian Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Chair of the GESA Paediatric Network, playing a key role in shaping national research and clinical practice in the field.
His research is conducted in collaboration with the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, a leading biomedical research center, and involves extensive national and international networks. His team works at the intersection of clinical care, laboratory science, and digital innovation, aiming to improve outcomes for children with chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
