Edward B. Lee, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as associate director of the Penn Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and co-director of the Institute on Aging, while also working as an attending physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Lee's educational background includes:
- Stanford University (1997), graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with honors.
- University of Pennsylvania (2005), where he earned MD and PhD degrees under Virginia M.-Y. Lee, PhD, focusing on amyloid pathology in experimental models.
His research centers on molecular neuropathology of neurodegenerative disorders, with primary emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His laboratory recently identified vacuolar tauopathy as a novel dementia subtype, advancing understanding of tau-related pathologies. Current work integrates molecular analysis with clinical correlations to elucidate disease mechanisms across these conditions.
Dr. Lee leads the Translational Neuropathology Research Laboratory, driving studies on molecular pathways in Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration, and ALS. This laboratory serves as the foundation for his investigations into pathological protein aggregation and its clinical manifestations.
