Edward B. Barbier is a University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University jointly appointed in the Department of Economics and School of Global Environmental Sustainability. His research addresses environmental economics, sustainable development, and natural resource policy, with expertise in climate change economics, water scarcity, and natural capital valuation.
Recent studies examine water efficiency policies, famine health impacts, climate club governance, and SDG progress metrics. Work emphasizes reform strategies for environmental crises and sustainable growth in developing economies. Authored over 350 peer-reviewed articles and 27 books including the award-winning Economics for a Fragile Planet.
Collaborates with international agencies including UN organizations and the World Bank. Leads research on integrating ecological boundaries into economic policy frameworks. Current projects focus on sustainable recovery post-COVID and inclusive climate agreements.
