Edmund Thomas

Dr Edmund Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University, with affiliations as an Associate Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Study and Departmental Representative in the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. His research focuses on Roman architecture, its societal role, and its reception in medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Key themes include monumentality, architectural aesthetics, sustainability, and intersections with philosophy and music.

His work spans monographs like Monumentality and the Roman Empire (2007) and co-edited volumes such as The Legacy of Plato’s Timaeus (2024). Recent projects include studies on solar technologies in antiquity with the University of Notre Dame and a focus on Baroque spatialities in literature and architecture. He has conducted fieldwork in Rome and Albania, including archaeological work at Butrint.

Research interests include spirally fluted columns, the Sublime in architecture, and the interplay between inscriptions and built spaces.
