Edith Toegel is an Associate Professor Emerita of German and Russian Languages and Literatures (German) at Hamilton College, where she has been a faculty member since 1993. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, an M.A. and B.A. from Tufts University, and studied at the University of Vienna. Her research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century German and Austrian literature and culture, with notable publications in journals like German Life and Letters and Oxford German Studies. She authored a critical biography of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1997). Beyond her academic work, she served as Associate Dean of Students and Director of Study Abroad Programs at Hamilton College.
Dr. Toegel was honored as Teacher of the Year at Hamilton College in 1997, reflecting her dedication to pedagogy. Her scholarly contributions bridge literary analysis with cultural history, emphasizing Austro-German intellectual traditions and the intersection of gender with narrative form.
