Edgar Whitley is a Professor of Information Systems at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Department of Management. He holds editorial roles in journals such as Information Technology and People and Journal of Information Technology. His expertise includes digital identity, privacy governance, global outsourcing, and cloud computing. He has advised governments worldwide on identity policies and served on high-profile advisory boards such as the Ada Lovelace Institute’s Ryder Review and the UK Government Digital Service’s Privacy and Consumer Advisory Group (PCAG).
Edgar holds a BSc (Econ) and PhD in Information Systems from LSE. His research has influenced policy outcomes, including the scrapping of UK biometric identity cards in 2010 and frameworks for Open Banking customer protection. He has supervised 11 PhD students and examined over 30 doctoral theses globally.
Key research interests include the ethical dimensions of digital futures, data governance, and the sociopolitical implications of identity systems. He has received awards including the AIS ATLAS Award (2021) and Impact Award (2021), recognizing his contributions to both academic and policy domains.
