Professor Edgar Jones is a leading scholar in the History of Medicine & Psychiatry at King's College London, specializing in the psychological impacts of war and conflict. He holds a professorship in the Department of Psychological Medicine within the School of Academic Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. Jones earned his doctorate in history from Nuffield College, Oxford, followed by a doctorate in clinical psychopathology at Guy's Hospital, and trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist. He joined King's College London in 1998 and currently leads the MSc in War & Psychiatry program.
His research focuses on moral injury in military personnel, radicalisation, and historical trauma studies, with notable contributions to understanding shell shock, PTSD, and chronic multi-symptom illnesses related to military service. Jones has authored reports for government and mental health charities, aiming to influence policy and practice. He serves on editorial boards for the British Journal of Psychiatry and History of Psychiatry, and has contributed to documentaries on war psychology.
Key achievements include the Gideon de Laune Gold Medal (2007) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ President’s Medal (2015). His work bridges historical analysis and modern clinical insights, addressing contemporary issues like the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic through historical analogies.
