Edgar E Coons is a Professor of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University, affiliated with the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts & Science. His career began in music composition before transitioning to neuroscientific research, focusing on drive mechanisms, hedonic processes, and brain reward systems.
Education: B.A. from Colorado College (1951), Ph.D. from Yale University (1964). His research examines neural interactions between hunger, reward, pain, and anxiety using rat models, particularly exploring hypothalamic stimulation effects. Key findings include stimulation-bound feeding behaviors and opioid/anxiolytic transmitter roles in balancing survival risks.
His laboratory investigates synaptic/axonal characteristics of neurons mediating these processes, employing brain stimulation parameter variations. Current work connects compositional form studies to cellular-level neural responses, analyzing how temporal patterns influence reward, hunger, and anxiety perception.
Lab activities focus on medial prefrontal cortex interactions, nucleus gigantocellularis behavior, and diazepam's modulation effects. Research emphasizes translational insights into anxiety management and feeding behavior.
