Edgar A. Arriaga is the Northey Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota, with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology and Biophysics. He directs the Mass Cytometry Initiative and contributes to the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism.
- Ph.D., Chemistry, Dalhousie University (1990)
- Licenciatura en Química, Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (1985)
Arriaga's research integrates chemical and engineering principles to address biomedical challenges through single-cell and organelle analysis, focusing on aging, cancer, and metabolic disorders. His group pioneers methods like high-throughput organelle measurements, mass cytometry, and subcellular proteomics/lipidomics to explore cellular heterogeneity.
His recent publications highlight innovations in mass cytometry for aging systems, clustering algorithms for single-cell data, and dielectrophoretic organelle separation. The group has secured NIH funding for single-cell molecular pathway analysis.
- 2024-25 Faculty Fellow, Office for Equity & Diversity (OED), University of Minnesota
Arriaga mentors a diverse team, including Ph.D. candidates and undergraduates. His alumni have pursued careers in academia, industry, and forensic science. The group collaborates with institutions like the Masonic Cancer Center and the Graduate School.
