Bruce A. Edgar is a Professor and Principal Investigator at the Huntsman Cancer Institute of the University of Utah, where he leads the Edgar Lab in the Department of Oncological Sciences. His research focuses on mechanisms controlling cell growth and proliferation using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system, with applications to human cancer biology and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Edgar received his B.A. from Swarthmore College in 1982 and a PhD in Genetics from the University of Washington in 1987. He completed postdoctoral work at UCSF and Oxford, and established his independent research career at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle in 1993. From 2009-2016, he worked as a professor at the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) and division leader at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany.
Dr. Edgar's research primarily investigates the control of cell growth and proliferation during development, tissue maintenance, and tumorigenesis. His work has identified key cell cycle and growth regulatory genes in Drosophila that play important roles in human diseases, particularly cancer. Current projects focus on intestinal stem cell regulation in Drosophila, mechanisms of epithelial self-renewal, and how cell proliferation is controlled by metabolism and growth factor signaling.
