Eddie Lee is a Professor of History at Winthrop University's Department of History within the College of Arts and Sciences. He concurrently serves as the Mayor of York, York County, a role he has held for 16 years, making him the only Winthrop faculty member to hold an elected political office. His dual career blends academia and public service, emphasizing time management and civic engagement.
Lee graduated from Winthrop University in 1983 ('83) and joined the faculty in 1994. He directs the graduate studies in history program, having taught over 10,000 students. His research focuses on American history, particularly Southern history, the Civil War, and the Vietnam War, resulting in 15 authored/co-authored books, including works on the Vietnam War timed to纪念 the conflict's 25th anniversary (2000).
Lee is recognized for historic preservation efforts, earning the Palmetto Trust Award in 2015 for leading the preservation of the historic York County Courthouse. A scholarship fund, the J. Edward Lee Scholarship, was established by his students and colleagues to support graduate history students. Contributors include six history professors, five elected officials, educators, and entrepreneurs.
His civic and academic roles are underpinned by a rigorous daily routine, beginning at 4:30 AM, and a lifelong passion for history cultivated through childhood visits to historic sites like Mount Vernon and Gettysburg, as well as South Carolina landmarks.
