Jim Downs is the Gilder Lehrman-National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Civil War Era Studies and History at Gettysburg College. He holds appointments in both the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences, emphasizing interdisciplinary research bridging history, medicine, and LGBTQ+ studies.

His recent work examines voter suppression and public health intersections.
His publications include the award-winning Maladies of Empire: How Colonialism, Slavery, and War Transformed Medicine (2021) and Stand by Me: The Forgotten History of Gay Liberation (2016). He is a co-series editor for History in the Headlines and editor of January 6th and the Politics of History (2024).
