Ed Schuuring is a Professor of Molecular Oncological Pathology at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Department of Pathology. He leads the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at the UMCG and holds roles in national and international committees, including the Dutch Society of Pathology and the European Society of Pathology. His research focuses on molecular biomarkers in lung and head & neck cancers, ctDNA analysis, and personalized medicine.
Education: He earned a Medical Biology degree from the University of Amsterdam (cum laude) and completed his PhD at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. His career includes roles at Leiden University Medical Center and the UMCG. He has supervised over 10 PhD students and leads multiple grants involving academic and industry collaborations.
Research Interests: Schuuring’s work emphasizes predictive biomarkers, DNA methylation, and liquid biopsies. He investigates ctDNA for early cancer detection and treatment monitoring, particularly in lung and cervical cancers. He also develops assays for circulating tumor DNA and collaborates with biotech companies like Roche and Illumina.
Grants & Awards: He oversees grants from KWF, ZonMW, and industry partners. His work includes projects on ctDNA in immunotherapy response and HPV-based cervical screening. He has received honoraria and grants from multiple pharmaceutical firms, all directed to the UMCG.
Labs & Teams: As head of the UMCG Molecular Pathology Lab, he manages molecular diagnostics for clinicians. He contributes to the PATH consortium for personalized cancer therapy and the COIN initiative for ctDNA implementation.
