Prof. Harry J.M. Groen is a Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Department of Pulmonary Diseases. His academic career includes roles such as Chest Physician and leadership in clinical trials, including over 100 phase 1–3 studies. He holds a Medical Degree from Utrecht University (1978), a Doctorate from the University of Groningen (1995), and became a Professor in 2003. His research focuses on lung cancer diagnostics, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and biomarkers. Groen chairs the NELSON Lung Cancer Screening Board and advises on scientific integrity at UMCG.
Education history includes clinical training in Lesotho and Yemen, followed by roles at Tilburg Hospital and Rotterdam University Hospital before joining UMCG in 1991. Current projects involve KWF-funded studies on tumor heterogeneity, CANCER-ID biomarker research, and interregional collaborations on circulating tumor cells. Clinical trials expertise spans therapeutic areas like MET exon 14 mutations and ALK gene therapies.
