Prof. Dr. ERTUĞRUL KAYA is a Professor of Medical Pharmacology at Niğdge Ömer Halisdemir University Faculty of Medicine, having joined in 2023 after serving at Düzce University Faculty of Medicine from 2010-2023. His academic career progressed from Doctor Lecturer (2010-2014) to Associate Professor (2014-2020) and finally to Professor (2020-present). He has held significant administrative roles including Head of Department and Research Application Center Director.
Education:
- Medical Specialization: Pamukkale University, Faculty of Medicine/Department of Internal Medical Sciences/Department of Medical Pharmacology (2002-2006)
- Thesis: Behavioral and biochemical effects of minocycline and nilvadipine in rats with cerebral ischemia induced by repeated four-vessel occlusion method
- Licence: Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine/Medicine Pr. (1992-1998)
Prof. Kaya's research primarily focuses on toxicology, particularly mushroom toxins (amanitins, phallotoxins, grayanotoxins), pharmacological interventions for toxin-induced damage, and analytical methods for toxin detection. His work spans pharmacokinetics, hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and the development of antidotes for mushroom poisoning. He has extensively studied Amanita species, Galerina marginata, and mad honey (grayanotoxin) toxicity, examining both the mechanisms of toxicity and potential therapeutic interventions using natural compounds and pharmaceutical agents.
His 15 most recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on mycotoxicology, with particular focus on amatoxins, analytical methods for toxin detection, and therapeutic interventions. His research combines molecular biology, cell culture studies, animal models, and clinical case analyses to understand toxic mechanisms and develop countermeasures. A significant portion of his work addresses forensic applications of toxin analysis and the development of diagnostic tools for mushroom poisoning cases.
Research Advising:
- Supervised 6 graduate students on topics including Amanita phalloides toxins, grayanotoxin effects, and antimicrobial properties of mushroom extracts
- Research projects span pharmacological effects of toxins, analytical methods, and potential therapeutic interventions
Research Projects:
- Currently leading 2 ongoing projects related to regional honey analysis and experimental hypertension models
- Completed 25+ research projects primarily focused on mushroom toxins, amanitin pharmacokinetics, and analytical methods
- Secured funding from TÜBİTAK and university-supported research programs
Prof. Kaya has developed patented diagnostic tools for mushroom poisoning, including an immunochromatographic card test for alpha-amanitin detection and gamma thiolactone derivatives for amanitin poisoning treatment. His work bridges laboratory research with clinical applications in toxicology and emergency medicine.
