Elena Pérez Estevan is an Assistant Professor and Doctor at the University of Alicante's Department of Translation and Interpreting. She holds a PhD in Translation and Interpreting (2022) and multiple Master's degrees in intercultural communication, medical translation, and public service interpreting. Her research focuses on interpreting in highly sensitive contexts such as end-of-life care, healthcare access for non-native speakers, and gender dynamics in translation. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Alcalá (2015–2016) and collaborates on their Intercultural Communication Master's program since 2020.
Teaching includes courses on translation theory, medical translation, and interpreting in multiple languages (English, French, German). She has directed/co-directed 19 undergraduate/master's theses in the last five years. Her work spans 6 research projects, including leadership in a 2019–2021 predoctoral fellowship program and collaboration on projects such as 'Methodology to Explore Stress in Affective Social Interpreting (MESTISA)' (2024–2025).
She is part of the INCOGNITO research group and the LOGOI laboratory at the University of Alicante. Her publications (5 journal articles, 5 book chapters since 2018) address topics like interpreter-mediated end-of-life encounters, gender bias in translation, and healthcare communication quality. Recent conference participations include presentations on gendered profession translation and empathy in palliative care interpreting at international forums in Poland and Spain.
