E.J. Westlake is the Chair and Professor of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts at The Ohio State University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on performance studies, gender theory, and postcolonialism, with a particular emphasis on nationalist performance in Nicaragua and Guatemala. She has authored multiple books including Our Land is Made of Courage and Glory and co-edited volumes such as Political Performances.

Her work bridges academic and applied theatre, including devising theatre about science and exploring postmodern performance practices. Westlake has held editorial roles for Theatre Journal and leadership positions in professional theatre organizations. She is a former Fulbright grantee and recipient of the Oregon Book Award for her play A.E..
Teaching specialties include performance theory, theatre history, and playwriting. Before academia, she co-founded Stark Raving Theatre in Portland, Oregon, and has extensive experience as a director and playwright.
