Dr. Moreno's research centers on Mexican history with emphasis on race, gender, and national identity formation in post-independence Mexico. His work examines how 19th-century intellectuals constructed racial ideals through popular narratives and war propaganda, particularly depicting guerrilla fighters and communities of color as symbolic "true Mexicans." Additional interests include Afro-Latin American studies, colonial Latin America, and literacy's role in nation-building.
His recent publications reveal consistent focus on Mexican identity construction through print culture and military history, with recurring themes of racial representation during the French Intervention and early republic periods. These works demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches bridging historical analysis with cultural and ethnic studies.
