Dóra Piroska

Dr. Dóra Piroska is an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations of the Central European University (CEU), Vienna, Austria. She holds a PhD in Political Science from CEU, specializing in International Relations. Her research focuses on the international political economy of banking and finance, with particular emphasis on European financial regulation, banking nationalism, and development finance in Eastern Central Europe. She has published extensively on topics such as the European Banking Union, macroprudential policies, and the role of institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Her work critiques the social and political impacts of financial governance frameworks, including fintech regulation and developmental disparities within the EU.

Key areas of research include the governance of Fintech through regulatory sandboxes, the paradoxes of EU financial integration, and the adaptive practices of international development banks in non-traditional regions like Egypt. Dr. Piroska has contributed to debates on the democratic implications of financial policies, particularly in post-socialist contexts. She co-edited a volume on János Kornai’s scholarship, reflecting her engagement with institutional and comparative political economy.

Her recent work addresses the stalled progress of EU financial markets due to uneven integration and the shifting mandates of institutions like the EBRD. She has also analyzed post-crisis banking governance in Slovenia and the implications of macroprudential policies in Dependent Market Economies (DMEs). Current research interests include the political economy of green finance and the evolving role of multilateral development banks in global development strategies.
