Dr Dylan Cliff is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Wollongong, specializing in children's movement behaviors including physical activity, sedentary behavior, and digital technology use. His research aims to inform policies and practices to enhance children's health and development through initiatives like the Sleep and Activity Database for the Early Years (SADEY) and the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child. He has secured over $42M in research funding and published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, achieving a h-index of 42.
Education: PhD in Physical & Health Education (University of Wollongong, 2004–2008) and BEd in Physical & Health Education (University of Wollongong, 2000–2003).
Research Interests: Compositional data analysis of movement behaviors, electronic media's impact on child development, and interventions to promote healthy screen time and physical activity in childcare and schools. He leads projects addressing global health disparities, such as the SUNRISE study in Ethiopia, and collaborates internationally on digital child research.
Leadership: Member of the team that developed Australia's 24-hour Movement Guidelines for children. Chief Investigator in the ARC Digital Child Centre and the SADEY project. Supervised over 14 higher-degree research students focusing on topics like screen time correlates and flexible learning spaces.
Grants & Collaborations: Principal investigator in NHMRC-funded trials and industry partnerships. Coordinates transdisciplinary teams across education, health, and technology sectors. Active in policy development and community engagement through programs like Healthy Bytes and OSHC interventions.
