Dr. Dwayne Sheehan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Mount Royal University. He holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, complemented by an MA from San Diego State University and dual undergraduate degrees in Physical Education and Education. Before academia, he served as a Marine Warfare Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy and spent 19 years as a K–12 physical education teacher. His career also includes leadership roles with Calgary High School Sports, Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA), and the Alberta Teachers' Association's Health and Physical Education Council (HPEC).
Dr. Sheehan's research focuses on lifespan motor development, particularly pre-adolescent gross motor proficiency. His work extends to coral reef conservation through SCUBA diving research on the Mesoamerican reef. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and secured $600K+ in research funding. Notable presentations include discussions on physical literacy implementation in schools and environmental impacts of recreational SCUBA diving.
His community engagement includes roles with the International Physical Literacy Association (Canadian Representative), Calgary Housing Authority, and Brookfield Residential Community Engagement initiatives. Dr. Sheehan's teaching areas include Human Growth and Development, Motor Learning, and Physical Activity for Older Adults.
