Dustin Burgess serves as Associate Professor of Music Education and Director of the Music Education program at Shorter University's School of Fine & Performing Arts. He also teaches applied trumpet and courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching: Pedagogy program. Previously, he held positions as Assistant Professor of Music Education, Music Education Coordinator, and Applied Trumpet at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and currently teaches as an adjunct professor in the University of Florida's Master of Music Education program.
Dustin Burgess earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Appalachian State University, Master of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education with Wind Conducting emphasis from the University of Florida.
His research focuses on comprehensive musicianship, assessment in music education, trumpet pedagogy, and quality band literature. Burgess has presented research at multiple state and national conferences including the South Carolina State Music Educators Conference, Georgia Music Educators Association Conference, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference, Florida College Music Educators Association Conference, and the National Association for Music Education History of Music Education Symposium. His scholarly work has been published in the International Trumpet Guild Journal, Florida Music Director, Georgia Music News, and National Band Association Journal.
Burgess is an active performer currently with Clocktower Jazz Ensemble and Northwest Georgia Winds. His extensive performance background includes service as section leader in the Ceremonial Band, Concert Band, Brass Quintet, Big Band, and Variety Rock Band with the 82D Airborne Division Band and Eighth United States Army Band, performing throughout the United States, South Korea, England, and France. He has also performed with numerous ensembles including Southern Winds Wind Symphony, Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Walt Disney World, and several brass bands.
As Musical Director and Conductor of the Roman Festival Brass Band, Burgess frequently serves as a guest conductor and clinician in area music programs. His previous teaching experience spans elementary, middle, and high school choral and band programs across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida. He has served as mentor for the Erie Youth Symphony Orchestra and was Artistic and Musical Director for the Youth Brass Band of Central Florida.
Burgess maintains professional memberships in the National Association for Music Education, Georgia Music Educators' Association, and North American Brass Band Association.
