Durgesh C. Rai

Durgesh C. Rai is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). His academic career is firmly rooted in structural engineering with a specialized focus on earthquake engineering and seismic analysis of structures.

Dr. Rai completed his B.E. (Hons) from REC, Tiruchirapalli, India in 1989, followed by an M.S. from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA in 1992, and earned his PhD from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, USA in 1996. His academic journey reflects a strong foundation in civil engineering with progressive specialization in structural mechanics.

Professor Rai's research interests center on structural engineering, particularly earthquake engineering, seismic behavior of structures, and structural retrofitting techniques. His work has significantly contributed to understanding how buildings respond to seismic forces and developing innovative strengthening methods for existing structures. His expertise spans reinforced concrete structures, masonry-infilled frames, and seismic retrofitting technologies that enhance structural resilience against earthquakes.
