Nihar Ranjan Patra

Nihar Ranjan Patra is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He has been with IIT Kanpur since 2001, progressing from Lecturer to Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and finally to Professor. His academic journey includes a PhD from IIT Kharagpur (2001), M.E. from Jadavpur University (1997), and B.E. from Utkal University (1995).

Dr. Patra specializes in Geotechnical Engineering with research interests focused on Pile Foundations, Soil Structure Interactions and Ground Engineering, Soil Arching, and Liquefaction Potential Evaluation. His work addresses critical geotechnical challenges in foundation engineering and seismic soil behavior, particularly relevant to the Indo-Gangetic plains region of India.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and earthquake geotechnics. The research spans theoretical modeling of pile behavior, soil stabilization techniques, site characterization through shear wave velocity measurements, ground response analysis, and liquefaction assessment of various soil types including pond ash materials. This work contributes significantly to understanding soil behavior under static and dynamic loading conditions.

Dr. Patra serves as a member of the Soil and Foundation Engineering Sectional Committee at the Bureau of Indian Standards (2012-present) and coordinates the National R&D Mission on Liquefaction of Soils during Strong Earthquakes (2013-present), demonstrating his leadership in advancing geotechnical engineering standards and research in India.

His laboratory work focuses on soil mechanics testing, particularly for liquefaction potential evaluation and soil-structure interaction studies, contributing to safer infrastructure development in seismic regions.
