Duilia F. de Mello serves as Ordinary Professor of Physics and Vice Provost for Global Strategies at The Catholic University of America's College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing, concurrently maintaining a research position at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center since 2003. Her academic journey spans international institutions across three continents, establishing her as a prominent observational astrophysicist with leadership in global academic initiatives.
Her educational foundation includes:
- Ph.D. in Astrophysics from University of Sao Paulo
- M.S. in Astronomy from University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
- M.S. in Radio Astronomy from Brazilian Space Agency (INPE)
- B.A. in Astronomy from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
Professor de Mello's research program centers on galaxy evolution through environmental interactions, with signature work on colliding galaxies, starburst phenomena, and stellar explosions including her discovery of supernova SN1997D. She investigates star formation across cosmic time using multi-wavelength observations from Hubble Space Telescope and GALEX, particularly through current projects examining the Ultra Deep Field, Compact Galaxy Groups, and nearby systems like M51 and M82. Her expertise bridges extragalactic astronomy, stellar astrophysics, and science advocacy, with notable contributions to understanding the starburst/AGN connection.
Professional trajectory highlights:
- Assistant Professor at Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden (2000–2003)
- Postdoctoral Researcher at Space Telescope Science Institute (1997–1999)
- Postdoctoral Researcher at Cerro Tololo Observatory (Chile) and Brazil's National Observatory (1995–1997)
Beyond research, she actively promotes science accessibility through children's literature including 'The Adventures of Pedro a Space Rock,' public speaking engagements worldwide, and fossil-hunting fieldwork in Florida – demonstrating a holistic approach to scientific engagement that spans research, education, and public outreach.
