معرفی
John Cannon is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Macalester College's College of Liberal Arts. He maintains an active research program in observational astronomy with a focus on nearby, low-mass galaxies, and teaches courses ranging from introductory astronomy to advanced astrophysics.
Research Interests:
- Multiphase interstellar medium of low-mass galaxies
- Stellar populations in external galaxies
- Evolution of dwarf galaxies
- Multiwavelength studies using Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, Very Large Array, and Kitt Peak National Observatory
Scientific Awards:
- Macalester College Exceptional Performance Award (2024)
- Macalester College Trustee Award (2016)
- NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program Fellowship (2001-2004)
Professor Cannon actively involves undergraduate students in his research on metal-poor, star-forming dwarf galaxies, which provide insights into star formation processes, stellar populations, and chemical evolution. He serves as Director of the MACRO Consortium and holds an affiliate Research Scientist position at the University of Iowa. His teaching portfolio includes core physics courses and specialized astronomy courses such as Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics, with a consistent pattern of sabbaticals reflecting active research engagement.
