Drew Davidson serves as Associate Professor of Theatre at Shorter University's School of Fine & Performing Arts, where he functions as production coordinator, Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society (APO) faculty advisor, and Director of the Shorter Comedy Society. He is currently in his third season as Artistic Director of the Rome Shakespeare Festival, demonstrating his dual commitment to academic and professional theatre practice.
Davidson's creative research focuses on innovative theatrical direction and audience engagement, particularly through interactive performance techniques and contemporary adaptations of classical works. His recent projects include directing his original adaptation of The Real Merry Housewives of Windsor and developing an interactive re-telling of Marlowe's Dr. Faustus where audience members influenced the protagonist's fate through their mobile devices—a production he plans to publish and potentially remount at theatre festivals.
As an educator, Davidson champions a philosophy centered on "freeing students to play" rather than merely teaching acting techniques, emphasizing memorization, diverse performance methods, and personalized mentoring tailored to individual student needs. Through his roles as APO faculty advisor and Director of the Shorter Comedy Society, he actively guides emerging theatre artists, while his position as chair of "Next Steps" with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival directly supports students transitioning from academic to professional theatre careers.
Davidson maintains a robust professional practice as a freelance theatre director and actor, recently directing The 39 Steps at the Appalachian Center for the Arts. His private dialect studio, Dialects with Drew, has produced notable successes with clients on Broadway, in film, and voiceover work. His creative laboratory extends to the Shorter Comedy Society and the Rome Shakespeare Festival, where he continues to develop innovative approaches to classical texts for contemporary audiences.
