Douglas Wiebe is a Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, leading research on injury risks, concussion management, and the intersection of geography and public health. As Director of the CDC-funded Penn Injury Science Center, he focuses on preventive strategies and policy interventions. His work spans injury epidemiology, spatial analysis, and healthcare policy, with notable contributions to TBI-related neurodegenerative disease studies (TREND) and the Ivy League-Big Ten Concussion Study. He also directs an NIH-funded training program in Botswana to enhance injury epidemiology capacity.
Key research interests include ecological momentary assessment, time series analysis, and spatial epidemiology. He received the 2017 Kenneth Rothman Prize for his assault risk study and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Wiebe developed the ReCoUPS platform, a mobile app for real-time concussion monitoring, and has authored numerous studies on firearm violence, school absenteeism, and athlete recovery. His grants include funding from NIH, CDC, and NINDS, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to public health challenges.
