Douglas Steele is a Clinical Professor of Neuroimaging at the University of Dundee, with expertise spanning psychiatry, neuroscience, and computational modeling. He holds a Doctor of Medicine (2004) and Ph.D. in Physics (1988), and has contributed extensively to understanding severe psychiatric illnesses (SPI) through neuroimaging and machine learning.
- University of Dundee (Head of Division, Clinical Professor of Neuroimaging)
- Honorary Professor, University of St Andrews (2016–2025)
- Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, NHS Tayside
Research Focus: Steele's work challenges dualistic frameworks in psychiatry, advocating for outcome-based illness definitions. His projects include:
- Medical Practice & Policy: Addressing premature mortality in SPI patients
- Translational Neuroscience: Machine learning for neuroimaging diagnostics
- Chronic Pain and Depression: Mechanisms and interventions
Key Contributions: Over 132 research outputs, including 15 recent articles on depression, schizophrenia, and chronic pain mechanisms. His team employs functional MRI, computational modeling, and UK Biobank data to develop objective diagnostic tools.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2021)
- MB ChB Year Prize in Psychiatry (1995)
Teaching & Leadership: He directs MSc modules in Biomedical Engineering and Translational Neuroscience, and supervises numerous PhD students. Steele leads large-scale projects like CAPE and PAINSTORM, funded by the Medical Research Council.
