Douglas Smith

Douglas Smith, M.D., serves as Professor of Psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) where he holds dual leadership roles as Director of Community Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Integrated Community Psychiatry and Primary Care Fellowship. Concurrently, he has been Medical Director for the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board since May 2012, following over a decade as Medical Director for Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare facilities. His academic career spans 20+ years across Ohio institutions including University of Toledo and UHHS-Case School of Medicine.

His educational credentials include:

• M.D. from University of Maryland School of Medicine (1993)
• Psychiatry Residency at Sheppard Pratt Hospital (1993-1997)
• Forensic Fellowship through Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland joint program (1998)

Dr. Smith's research focuses on transformative systems for serious mental illness care, integrated psychiatric-primary care models, and forensic psychiatry applications. His work emphasizes community-based solutions with over 100 presentations worldwide including England, and he actively shapes policy through leadership roles in psychiatric associations.

His distinguished recognitions include:

• Distinguished Life Fellow status in American Psychiatric Association

As President of Northeast Ohio Psychiatric Association and Chair of Ohio Psychiatric Physicians’ Integrated Healthcare Committee, he drives statewide initiatives while serving on boards of Ohio Health Information Partnership and NAMI Ohio. He maintains active clinical engagement through part-time forensic psychiatric practice conducting civil/criminal evaluations alongside academic responsibilities in MS3 ZeroSuicide training and residency education.
