He leads the museum’s research and administrative efforts, focusing on molluscan ecology, paleoecology, and stable isotope analysis to reconstruct paleoenvironments and climates. His work extends to archaeological sites, examining site seasonality and climate variability. Jones has served on numerous boards, including the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), where he received the 2024 Distinguished Service Award. He has raised over $175M in grants and expanded museum facilities, such as the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity. His research integrates interdisciplinary approaches, from Mars analog studies to coastal ecology, while advancing museum digitization and AI initiatives.
Education: Ph.D. in Geological and Geophysical Sciences from Princeton University. Research emphasizes Cenozoic and modern environments, with global applications in paleoclimatology and archaeological analysis. Awards include the AAM’s highest honor for sustained leadership in museums. Jones oversees collections exceeding 7 million specimens and advocates for museums as vital community institutions.
