Douglas M. McLeod is the Evjue Centennial Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on media effects, social conflicts, and strategic communication, with extensive publications exploring framing in contexts ranging from national security to social protests.
He earned his undergraduate degree in journalism and psychology from the University of Wisconsin, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in mass communication and sociology from the University of Minnesota.
McLeod investigates two primary areas: (1) media's role in domestic and international conflicts, including protest coverage and audience impact, and (2) factors shaping media content and audience outcomes, particularly framing effects. His recent work examines how media representations influence public perceptions of issues like national security, social justice, and health communication.
His articles demonstrate a consistent focus on communication theory and media effects, with frequent exploration of political messaging, health communication efficacy, and digital methodologies like AI-assisted analysis. Trends include experimental designs testing message framing and cross-cultural comparisons of media narratives.
He teaches courses in strategic communication, sports marketing, and media effects, and developed the Sports Communication Certificate program. His pedagogical approach integrates research with practical campaign development for real-world clients.
