Douglas Lane Patey is the Sophia Smith Professor of English Language & Literature at Smith College. His work bridges 18th-century British literature, historical contexts, and interdisciplinary studies.

Research focuses on the intersection of 18th-century British literature, history of science, and interdisciplinary frameworks. He has edited and written extensively on authors like Dryden, Pope, Swift, and Evelyn Waugh, while also exploring the origins of modern disciplinary boundaries.
Recent publications highlight trends in biographical writing, probability in literary form, and addiction studies through historical lenses. His upcoming edition of Evelyn Waugh's Ninety-Two Days underscores his commitment to literary preservation.
