Matthew Colin Augustine is a Senior Lecturer in Later Seventeenth-Century English Literature at the School of English, University of St Andrews. He holds a PhD in English and American Literature from Washington University in St Louis (2010) and previously taught at the University of Oregon's Clark Honors College. His expertise centers on literature and culture of the English Civil Wars and Restoration periods (c. 1603–1745), with additional interests in book history, reception studies, rhetoric, and biographical writing.
His research focuses extensively on poet Andrew Marvell, with contributions on John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift. Augustine has edited major volumes like The Oxford Handbook of Restoration Literature and Imagining Andrew Marvell at 400, and his work engages themes such as providence, political time frameworks, and literary periodicity.
He has led the IEP USA International Exchange Programme (2014) and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through cultural heritage preservation efforts. Prospective students are encouraged to pursue topics aligned with his research specializations.
