Douglas Humpherys is Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, where he served as Chair of the Piano Department for twenty years. An acclaimed concert pianist, his career spans four decades across four continents, with recent performances in major Asian cities and throughout Europe and the Americas.
His educational background includes a Master of Music from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music. He studied with Nelita True, Martin Canin, and Robert Smith.
Professor Humpherys' professional focus encompasses Piano Performance, Music Pedagogy, and Chamber Music. He is renowned for his interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire, including works by Brahms, Dutilleux, and Prokofiev. His international teaching engagements have significantly influenced piano education globally, particularly in China, Korea, and Taiwan.
His notable awards include:
- Gold medal at the first Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition
- Eastman’s Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching (2016)
- Induction into the Steinway and Sons National Teachers Hall of Fame (2021)
As an educator, Professor Humpherys has mentored numerous competition winners, including laureates of the Honens, Cleveland, Hilton Head, and MTNA competitions. He has held visiting residencies at institutions such as the Central Conservatory in Beijing, Yonsei University, and the University of Michigan. Additionally, he serves as Artistic Director of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition since 2013 and frequently adjudicates major international competitions.
His global impact extends through hundreds of master classes at leading conservatories worldwide and participation in prestigious summer festivals including the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Beijing International Piano Festival.
