Dr. Douglas Goltz is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Winnipeg, affiliated with the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Carleton University (1995) and completed postdoctoral research at McGill University (1995-1997). His research focuses on analytical chemistry and the science of cultural objects, including microsampling for metal/pigment identification via atomic spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging techniques for historical artifact analysis. Since 1997, he has secured over $1.8M in research funding and mentored 22 undergraduate research project students and 45 summer research students.
His courses span foundational chemistry to advanced topics, including instrumental analysis and directed research projects. Notable research areas include ink migration studies, daguerreotype preservation, and dye separation using capillary electrophoresis. Collaborative projects with institutions like the Canadian Conservation Institute apply spectroscopic methods to solve heritage science challenges.
Dr. Goltz’s work bridges analytical chemistry with cultural heritage preservation, emphasizing non-destructive techniques. His publications highlight advancements in hyperspectral imaging, microextraction technologies, and material characterization of historical artifacts. He actively engages in outreach through academic teaching and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
