Christa L. Colyer is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Wake Forest University, where she has held various leadership roles, including Department Chair (2006–2014) and Associate Dean for Academic Planning (2016–2020). She holds a B.Sc. (Honours) from Trent University (1988), an M.Sc. (Distinction) from the University of Guelph (1991), and a Ph.D. from Queen’s University (1995). Her postdoctoral work at the University of Alberta (1995–97) focused on analytical chemistry. Colyer’s research centers on analytical tools for biomolecule and drug analysis, leveraging carbon dots, fluorescent dyes, and DNA aptamers. Key applications include drug testing for synthetic analogs and marijuana legalization impacts. She collaborates with industry and international labs to bridge basic science and applied practices.
Her educational background includes appointments at Wake Forest University since 1997, with stints at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (2003–2004). She has received prestigious awards, including the James and Courtenay Harton Faculty Fellowship (2023–2026) and multiple teaching awards. Her lab’s current project explores carbon dots and squarylium dyes for sensing and separations. She has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications, emphasizing method development in capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.
Notable recognitions include the 2013 Teaching Innovation Award and the 2002 Reid-Doyle Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Her research and administrative contributions reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary science and education innovation.
