Douglas Gibler is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Alabama, affiliated with the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR). He holds a PhD and leads research on international and intrastate conflict dynamics within the Department of Political Science.
His research centers on how territorial disputes influence international peace, the cross-border factors driving civil conflicts, and state formation processes. Dr. Gibler's work demonstrates that resolving territorial claims fundamentally alters conflict patterns between states, with implications for peacebuilding and state stability. His findings appear in premier journals including the American Political Science Review and Journal of Peace Research.
Research funding comes from the National Science Foundation, Folke Bernadotte Academy, and HF Guggenheim Foundation. He directs the International Conflict Data Project and authored the Cambridge University Press book The Territorial Peace, establishing foundational frameworks for analyzing territorial disputes' impact on international relations.
