Douglas Call is a Regents' Professor in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health at Washington State University since 2012. He initiated his antimicrobial-resistance research program at the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology upon joining WSU in 2000 and currently holds an adjunct appointment in this department. Dr. Call serves on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Academy of Sciences (2021-present) and previously served as the chair of the WSU Faculty Senate (2021-22). He was Associate Director of the Allen School from 2013-2020 and Director of the Immunology & Infectious Disease graduate program from 2017-19.
Dr. Call's research focuses on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, the fate and impact of excreted antibiotic residues in agriculture, mechanisms of action for bacteriocins and antimicrobial peptides, evolution of antimicrobial resistance, and application of electrochemical systems to clinical care and diagnostics. His work spans from bench science to field work across multiple countries including Tanzania, Kenya, and Guatemala, with support from major funding agencies including CDC, NIH, NSF, and Wellcome Trust.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a strong emphasis on global antimicrobial resistance patterns, particularly through the Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals (ARCH) studies across multiple countries. His research employs molecular epidemiology approaches to track resistant bacteria in agricultural systems, hospitals, and communities, with increasing focus on innovative diagnostic methods including electrochemical detection systems.
- Sahlin Eminent Faculty Award, 2021
- Elected member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences, 2017
- Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Research, Scholarship & Arts, 2017

Dr. Call has trained over 20 graduate students throughout his career and has been actively involved in professional service including serving on the editorial board of Applied & Environmental Sciences (2008-2022). His research program demonstrates strong integration between laboratory science and field applications, with particular emphasis on the One Health approach connecting human, animal, and environmental health aspects of antimicrobial resistance.
