Douglas C. Hansen

Douglas C. Hansen is a Distinguished Research Scientist and Research Professor at the University of Dayton’s School of Engineering, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, and a key member of the Coatings, Corrosion, and Erosion Group at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI). He holds a Ph.D. in Marine Biochemistry (University of Delaware, 1993), an M.S. in Marine Biochemistry (University of Delaware, 1989), and a B.S. in Marine Biology (Richard Stockton College, 1982). His research focuses on corrosion electrochemistry, biopolymer-based corrosion inhibitors, biomolecular interactions at metal surfaces, and advanced electrochemical techniques for material characterization.

Dr. Hansen has authored over 60 publications, holds 3 patents, and has delivered over 100 presentations globally. His work emphasizes environmentally friendly coatings and inhibitors, scanning probe measurements, and electrochemical imaging. He is affiliated with organizations like the American Chemical Society and the Electrochemical Society, where he became a Fellow in 2021. Notable awards include the 2019 Fellow of NACE International and the 2016 Outstanding Engineer and Scientist Award from the Affiliate Societies Council of Dayton.

His research spans interdisciplinary applications, including biomineralization studies in marine organisms and corrosion protection for aerospace and biomedical materials. He has led projects on atmospheric corrosion severity analysis, corrosion inhibitor development, and non-destructive evaluation techniques like the Scanning Kelvin Probe. Collaborations include studies on mussel adhesive proteins as flash rust inhibitors and the electrochemical behavior of oyster shells for biomedical applications.
