Karolyn Mueller Hansen serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton.
Educational Background:
- Ph.D. in Marine Biology/Biochemistry from University of Delaware (1990)
- M.S. from Drexel University (1984)
- B.S. from Pennsylvania State University (1980)
Dr. Hansen's research program integrates engineering and biological principles with two primary focuses: biosensor development and biomaterials research. Her biosensor work centers on designing detection systems for biological parameters in aqueous and vapor samples, with applications spanning environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and security. Her biomaterials research investigates the shell formation process of Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in collaboration with the University of Dayton Research Institute, exploring bio-inspired composites for applications in surface coatings, corrosion inhibition, and hybrid materials.
Her research bridges multiple disciplines including marine biology, biochemistry, materials science, and sensor technology, with practical applications addressing real-world challenges in environmental and medical fields.
As Department Chair, Dr. Hansen leads the Biology department's academic and research initiatives while maintaining an active laboratory investigating the intersection of biological systems and engineered solutions.
