Douglas Bollon Archibald serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine. He holds cross appointments in Innovation in Medical Education (Faculty of Medicine) and the Faculty of Education, while directing research and innovation at the C.T. Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre (CTLC) and contributing as an Investigator at the Bruyere Research Institute.
His research investigates educational technologies' role in medical learning, emphasizing blended learning, adult education, e-learning systems, teacher education frameworks, and eHealth applications. Methodologically, he employs qualitative and mixed methods to examine how digital tools enhance clinical training—particularly in primary care settings—focusing on laptop-based learning, electronic devices, and technology-integrated pedagogy.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent exploration of eConsult services across medical specialties, with emphasis on quality metrics, referral behaviors, and professional development impacts. Key themes include technology-mediated specialist-primary care collaboration, digital consultation standards, and competency building through online platforms like the ADAPT program for pharmacists.
Dr. Archibald currently supervises four graduate students: Michael Dougan (expected completion 2028), Rachel Grant, Jenny Stodola, and Rachelle Lee-Krueger. His leadership at CTLC and Bruyere Research Institute drives innovation in primary health care education through technology-enhanced learning initiatives and research partnerships.
