Doug Lauffenburger is a Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Engineering, where he directs the Translational Systems Biology laboratory. His work integrates experimental and computational methodologies to develop predictive models of cellular behavior based on molecular and cellular network properties.
Research interests span fundamental cell dysregulation mechanisms and translational applications across diverse domains:
- Cancer biology (breast, colon, lung, pancreatic cancers, leukemias, lymphomas)
- Inflammatory pathologies (endometriosis, Crohn’s disease, colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease)
- Immune system research for vaccine development against infectious diseases (AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, Covid)
- Complex tissue modeling using mouse models, human subjects, and tissue-engineered micro-physiological systems
- Cross-species translation frameworks leveraging omics-based machine learning
Professor Lauffenburger has mentored over 100 doctoral and postdoctoral trainees, with alumni pursuing academic faculty positions internationally, industry roles in biotechnology/pharmaceuticals, and careers in policy and government agencies.
