Doug Cowen is a Professor of Physics at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Department of Physics and Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. His research focuses on particle astrophysics and experimental particle physics, particularly neutrino physics and detector development. He leads the Penn State IceCube Group and collaborates on major projects like the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON), and the LiquidO detector initiative.
Education:
- B.A. in Physics, Dartmouth College (1983)
- M.S. in Physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison (1985)
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison (1990)
Research interests include neutrino astrophysics, multimessenger observations, and advanced detector technologies. His work spans neutrino oscillations, cosmic sources of high-energy particles, and real-time astrophysical transient detection. Recent studies include light collection techniques for detectors and machine-learning-driven event reconstruction.
Key awards include the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship (2022–2024), Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship (2015–2016), and NSF CAREER Award (1999). He has advised numerous graduate students and postdocs, contributing to collaborations like Eos and WATCHMAN.
Current research groups include the IceCube team and AMON network. His work bridges experimental particle physics with astrophysical observations, emphasizing multimessenger strategies to understand cosmic phenomena.
