Professor Dorothy Ker is the Professor of Composition and Director of Research in the Music department at the University of Sheffield’s School of Languages, Arts and Societies. She specializes in composition, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and live performance with digital media. Her roles include teaching composition modules at all levels and supervising practice-led PhDs, prioritizing student development through live performance opportunities with ensembles like the Ligeti Quartet and the University’s ‘Sound Laboratory’ series.
Her research focuses on experimental music forms, including projects like ‘21st Century Oboe’ and ‘String Taxonomies,’ which integrate student collaboration. She has led interdisciplinary initiatives such as the EPSRC-funded ‘The 19th Step’ and ‘Amelia and the Mapmaker,’ collaborating with visual artists, choreographers, and mathematicians like Marcus du Sautoy. Her compositions have been performed globally, including by the London Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Notable awards include the CANZ Trust Fund Award (2015) and the 2013 University Best Personal Tutor accolade. She has held visiting roles, including at the New Zealand School of Music (2013–2014). Her work bridges music with technology, text, and visual arts, fostering innovative performance practices.
